Gibson B. Kagaruki is a Senior Research Scientist of the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), based at Tukuyu Center with BSc in Applied Statistics, MSc in Health Informatics and currently pursuing PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics-specializing in modelling of cardio-metabolic risk factors.He has worked with NIMR for 13years in different research projects both quantitative and qualitative in nature. His interest is on conducting researches for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) including diabetes, heart diseases and cardiovascular diseases and chronic communicable diseases (TB and HIV). Examples of the studies conducted include i) STEPS survey of NCD risk factors in Tanzania ii) Assessment of Magnitude and Risk factors of NCDs in HIV/AIDS Clients Attending CTC: Impact and Challenges on Prevention and Patients Management in Tanzania, iii) Assessment of magnitude of HIV risk factors, challenges and strategies to improve HIV/AIDS service delivery and utilization among mobile and high risk groups in Tanzania, iv) Assessment of HIV testing and counselling needs and barriers among secondary school students in rural and urban settings of Tanzania, v) Burden, spectrum and etiology of type 2 diabetes in sub-Saharan Africa: A mult-center study of the prevalence of environmental and genetic determinants of type 2 diabetes in sub Saharan Africa, vi) Tanzania Non- Communicable Diseases and Injuries Poverty Commission - Baseline Situation Analysis Report-Lancet Commission, vii) The right to health and access to universal health coverage for older people in Tanzania, viii)Assessment of Socio-Cultural and Environmental Context of Food Consumption, Dietary Patterns and Dietary Adequacy in Zanzibar towards Developing Food Composition Tables and Food-Based Dietary Guidelines for Zanzibarviii) Prevention Package and model for predicting cardio-metabolic risk factors among street foods consumers in Dar es Salaam; just to mention few.He has been alsoproviding consultancy services to both local and international organizations. Kagaruki also has participated in writing 17 technical reports and has published 22 papers in the peer review journals.
