Governing Council
According to the establishing Act, the Institute has a Council responsible for the performance of the functions and management of affairs of the Institute. The NIMR Council comprises of the Chairman and other twelve members. The President of the United Republic of Tanzania appoints the Chairman and the Director General. The Minister for Health appoints the Council members. The council performs its functional and managerial issues through three advisory committees namely:
- Appointment and Disciplinary Committee
- Finance and Planning Committee
- Medical Research Coordinating Committee
It is through these Committees that all matters related to functioning of the Institute are forwarded to the Council for approval and back to the Institute’s Management for implementation.
Directorates
There are three directorates under the Director General:
Directorate of Research Coordination and Promotion
This directorate is responsible for the following for providing technical advice to matters related to research development and promotion. It is responsible for developing/ up-dating and implementing strategies for institutional research. The directorate support and promote the development and conduct of research in the country. It also facilitates collaboration and networking between researcher and their institutions within and outside the country.
Directorate of Information Technology and Communication
The directorate maintain computerized and update database of registered researchers; promote and advance information technology; disseminate database information to pertinent users; collect information and updating a national health research inventory of on-going planned research. The directorate is also responsible for the maintenance of computers and network with stakeholders; publication and dissemination of health research findings; maintenance and updating of the NIMR website and organising of NIMR Annual Joint Scientific Conferences.
Directorate of Finance and Administration
The directorate plan, direct and control the financial and accounting operations of the Institute; prepare and submit to the Director General reports on the working and audited accounts of the Institute. It is responsible for coordinating the preparation of budgets and assessment of the financial situation of the Institute; advise the Director General on all matters pertaining to finance accounting, administration, personnel and supplies services and staff development. It is the responsibility of the directorate to evaluate the current progress of the Institute so as to provide fundamental feedback for the preparation of future programmes and budget.
The Institute Headquarters are in Dar es Salaam. The Headquarters has a central role in coordination, monitoring and promotion of health research and provides a linkage between health research generators and the users. In addition, at the Headquarters, Health Systems and Policy and Traditional Medicine Researches are carried out.
