Dr. Leonard L. Maboko is the Director of Mbeya Research Centre of the National Institute for Medical Research (the former Mbeya Medical Research Programme). Dr. Maboko holds a PhD in Clinical Epidemiology of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London, UK (2010), Master of Science in Sexually Transmitted Infections and HIV of the University of London, UK (1999), and Degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) of the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (1993).
Dr. Maboko started working with MMRP in 2000 and became the Managing Director of the Programme in 2003; MMRP was a collaborative/joint research programme between and among the University of Munich, Germany, US Military HIV Research Programme, USA and the Government of Tanzania (Mbeya Regional Medical Office, Mbeya Referral Hospital and National Institute for Medical Research). The Programme became an official NIMR centre in November 2010.
His previous posts include Regional AIDS/Sexually Transmitted Infections Control Coordinator (1995-2002) of the Mbeya Regional HIV/AIDS Control Programme of the Mbeya Regional Medical Office in collaboration with the Germany Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ, now GIZ) and Registrar in the Obstetrics/Gynaecology Department of Mbeya Referral Hospital (May – August 1995).
Since 2000, Dr. Maboko has participated in many researches on HIV, TB, Malaria, and other tropical diseases and has published 39 articles in peer reviewed journals. His main interest is on HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Infections research, including operational research and interventions.
